How do businesses pay, and what is the cost?

As a business owner, I wanted to know how much it would cost me to hire a writer. I found a statement that I didn’t like, which put me off wanting to join them. “You get what you pay for. And we can prove it.”

Payment is based on

  •    hourly contracts are based on the number of keystrokes.
  •    They take images of screenshots of the freelancer’s screen so you can see that they are putting in the time
  •    Fixed-price contracts are an agreement, and payment is made once the deal has been reached

How do you pay?

  •    Mastercard
  •    Visa
  •    American Express, Discover
  •    PayPal

The surcharge usually is a 3% admin fee for each payment.

How does Upwork Pay you?

  •    Fixed Fee projects
  •    Freelancers and agencies are charged 20%, 10% or 5% service fee, and it depends on the total amount the client has been billed.

My Final Opinion of Upwork

What I liked about this organisation was my ability to explore the community and feel about them without joining.  However, If I wanted to post or receive any notification, I would have to register.

What I did have access to was

  •    Latest Announcements
  •    New solutions to issues
  •    Recent Threads
  •    Start a conversation
  •    And so much more

“You get what you pay for. And we can prove it.” Such a rude comment, but that’s my opinion. You can even chat with the Community Bot! Sorry, I want to talk with real people, not a Bot!

  • Andrew

I used upworks over a year ago when i needed some help with SEO for my website. The person I selected was not the most experienced and also not the most expensive. The arrangement worked well for both of us as she achieved what I wanted and I paid her what she asked.

It was reassurug to be able to see the screenshots of her working on the projects that I gave to her. So I know my money was not being waisted why she was playing around on social media.

I would use them again, and who knows, one day I may even offer my services as a way to gain extra income.

Thanks for sharing this info. I would recommend upworks as i have only had good experiences with them.

      Hi Andrew
It’s great to hear you have had some experience with them in a positive way. It’s good to know that you will use them again and even offer your services to gain extra income. You must let me know how you get on once you do join them. I would love to know for the future. Thank you for stopping by with your informative comment. I appreciate it.

  • John Stanlet

    Hi Yvonne,
Thanks for your great review of Upwork. As a buyer of contracted services, I have always had the impression that you can find slightly higher talent on Upwork compared to Fiverr. I can see they both start at around the 20% fee which is pretty high for those submitting their gigs to pay.
Upwork is a good marketplace to find contractors and gig providers to do outsourced work. I have used Upwork a few times and it can be hit and miss as to who you get and the rates you pay. With any contractor/outsourced services we need to do our reviews on them.
    Regards John

    • Yvonne Bray

Hi John, it’s good to hear from you regarding Upwork. It’s always a pleasure to talk to someone who has had experience with them. I often think it depends on who you get to do the work and the costs. Me, I prefer to do my own that way; I own the work outright. Thank you for your valuable comment.

  • Ceci

    Hi Yvonne,
Thanks for this thorough review on Upwork. I find the quality of their services a bit higher than Fiverr.

I personally do not like their tagline “You get what you pay for” because this is not accurate. Cheap is not necessarily terible and neither is expensive the best. I have used Upworks before and had a good experience. I think it boils down to how much time you are willing to invest reviewing portfolios, asking questions and checking reviews before selecting someone. Most assuredly the cheapest or most expensive might not be the best use of your money! Hiring a Content Writer on this platform will definitely require a lot of work!

    • Yvonne Bray

      Hi Ceci
Thank you for stopping by and leaving an informative response. I totally agree with you I looked at that tagline and found it to be a bit crappy. They could have thought of a better one. I prefer to do my own work rather than hire someone else. I want to be the owner of my own work. When it comes to cost, you might pay a great deal for something you could have done yourself.
